Quamichan Lake Canoe & Kayak Vancouver Island

Quamichan Lake in North Cowichan, British Columbia will play host to the 2022 National Rowing Championships from November 10-13, 2022. This will be the first time that Quamichan has been the location of the National Rowing Championships.

Art Mann Park is located on Quamichan Lake in the community of Duncan, BC, Canada on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. The small lakeside park is a quick getaway on the shores of a community lake ideal for picnicking, birdwatching, and canoeing. The park includes a grassy lawn area, an adventure playground, a small strip of sand beach, washrooms and roof top boat launch.

While Quamichan Lake is considered an urban lake, lying as it does within Duncan's city limits, it rarely feels like it, parts of it are indeed quite wild and beautiful. One can easily spend and afternoon, or possibly an entire day, exploring this unique and picturesque lake. The Lake can be accessed through Art Mann Park which features a full boat launch, picnic area and a children's play.

Both lakes were formed when glaciers receded 11,000 years ago; both are shallow (seven metres deep) and bowl-shaped; and both can be expected to fill in and disappear in the next few thousand years.

According to the Akriggs, the lake derives its name from a hill located behind the Quamichan First Nation village that resembles a humpbacked person. 1 A note on the BC Geographical Names website states that Quamichan was an ogre who feasted on children. 1
